Regardless of where and when you ride, your drive train is always taking a solid load. Under pressure from chain tension, synchronising with gears and all of this during exposure to the elements - wet weather, dust, dirt and sand all combining to slow down the mechanical efifciency of your drive train which both increases wear and tear and also slows you down.
Of late the wet conditions, even if you wait until it's dry, means there is more grit and grime entering your drive train so here are the best tips to keep things running optimally.
Dry conditions
1. Wipe your chain down, lubricate it and wipe of the excess with a rag at least once a week
2. Clean and degrease your chain and cluster at least once a month and re oil
3. Check your chain wear every 3-4 months
Wet conditions
1. If expecting wet conditions apply a 'wet conditions' chain lubricant for extra pre ride protection
2. Check the level of grime build up on the chain after the ride and assess if you should simply dry off and re lubricate or
3. Clean and degrease your chain and cluster if there is excess grime and grit
4. Additionally check and wash your rims with a bike wash and also your brake pads
What you'll need to keep your drive train in check
1. An environmentally friendly degreaser
2. The right type of lubricant to suit your riding conditions - eg: wet lubricat, dry lubricant , wax based
3. Chain cleaning tool
4. Cog brush
5. Bike wash
6. Chain checker
Additional tips
We like to use biodegradable products where possible and these are readily available
Use disposable gloves whenever checking your drive train - keeps your hands clean
Lay your tools and equoipment on a sheet of paper
