Port Macquarie Half Ironman

Tara Prowse continued with a consistent season finishing second at the Port Macquarie Half Ironman and improving on her sixth position from last year.

Competitors lined up to an overcast morning and a southerly breeze. The out and back swim was quick again with the neutral current starting to run as they hit the turnaround and swam for transition. Chris Kemp was in the lead group of three with Boyd Conrick and Cam Watt as they exited the water with about a minute lead but is was not to be his day.

A mistake in transition saw Kemp trip over and land on his bike and his new 3T VENTUS bar setup was knocked off centre causing his back to lock up. At the 55km mark the pain caused him to relinquish his position in the lead group and eventually lost 10minutes on the final 35km before retiring.

Tara Prowse was eager to race well and exited the water in 6th place. Through the first lap she mirrored eventual winner Charlotte Paul but the early light breeze became a southerly buster on the second lap saw her lose almost 2 minutes by the time she entered T2 for the run. Prowse chased hard from the start, making inroads over the first 5km but then the gap remained and eventually the gap started to go out. The local girl, Prowse received a huge cheer at the finish to claim her first Half Ironman podium.
