Poppett wins Roughwater classic

Gemma Poppett swam an incredible race at the Watson's Bay to Bondi Beach roughwater on Mothers Day to finish first female and claim sixth overall. It caps of a stellar summer of open water swims and comes two weeks after her win at the Coogee to Bondi 5km.

The South Head Roughwater event  requires teamwork to manage the swimmers across the 10-11km course with swimmers requiring both a motor boat and paddler to get them through. Gemma swam a sensible race rounding the heads in 11th place overall and continued to draw away from her rivals towards a finish time of 2hours and 54 minutes.

Training partner Sacha Bollag finished in third place in the women's arriving on the shores of Bondi in 2 hours and 48 minutes. The open water focus and challenge was a positive step forward after a knee injury halted her triathlon this season. The next challenge for Sacha is to have the knee repaired in the next fortnight and work towards a return to triathlon for next season.
